I find that my favorite science fiction stories are a well-crafted juxtoposition of novel environments/situations (based on the chosen branch of science) with familiar, deep-seeded Truths of humanity.
That's why Star Wars was such a blockbuster. People can relate to the story (according to Lucas, based on mythology. I'd have to research which myths). It's also why I think HG Wells' War of the Worlds, the book, is so good...like Signs, it's not so much about the aliens.
Going to see Avatar this weekend.
Do you like Sci-Fi? What are some of your favorites (movies or books)?

I <3 Kim Stanley Robinson, Lois McMaster Bujold, China Mieville, Connie Willis... I don't really watch SF tv or movies much but I like hard SF that's leftist politically, and fantasy/space opera stuff with actual characters. I'm a midwesterner and Bujold's most recent fantasy novels are set in a world built off American folktales & tall tales, which is AWESOME.

I like sci-fi more on TV and movies than I do in books. For some reason I lean more towards the fantasy genre when reading books. My husband and I love Star Trek (TNG), Battlestar Galactica (which we just finished last week!), and I'm just about to get Firefly from Netflix. I'm really excited about that one!

I forgot! I also enjoy SciFi audiobooks for looong training runs. Last year, I listened to Isaac Asimov, Robert Charles Wilson, Richard K. Morgan, Douglas Adams, and Frank Herbert (non-Dune works).

I saw "Avatar" yesterday. I thought it was a beautiful rendering of a familiar American story. Also, the 3D is quite spectacular and enhances the effect of the surround-sound.

I haven't seen Avatar yet. I need to!
I didn't used to like scifi, but I think I am getting into it more and more. I <3 Star Wars!
